5th Grade Social Studies

Ms. Karen Sun

What Does 5th Grade Social Studies Cover?

We’re going to be learning about Tennessee history. We’ll also get a look at the bigger picture and history of the United States.

What Will I Be Learning?

We’ll be covering some of the following topics:

  • Pre-colonial Tennessee
  • Industrialization
  • Civil War and Reconstruction
  •  World War I
  • Great Depression
  •  World War II
  • Civil Rights Movement
  • Tennessee Today

How Will We Learn All That?

We’ll be doing a lot of reading and writing, both in groups and individually. We’ll watch some videos and listen to some music and read some political cartoons. I’ll be there to help you each step of the way!

What If I Need Extra Help?

You can ask me after or before class if you have any questions. If you need more help, you can ask me for help after school. You are also welcome to call or email me at any time (before 7:00 pm!) if you need any help on homework.

What Does Your Class Look Like?

We will learn new content on Monday and Tuesday. You’ll have some in-class work to do on Wednesday and time to catch up on anything missing. Thursday we will review what we’ve learned earlier that week, and on Friday we will have either quizzes or tests.

What Is Your Homework Policy?

I will assign homework on Mondays and Thursdays. We will be going over the answers in class on Tuesdays and Fridays.

What Is Your Late Work Policy?

I take late work with no deduction to points, but you must communicate to me (tell me before/after class, text, call, email, etc.) that it will be late and when you plan to have it turned in. If it is late after your deadline, I will deduct 5% from your grade each day.

What Is Your Absence Policy?

You have the number of days you are absent + an extra day to turn in any work from when you are absent. For example: if you are absent two days, you have three days to turn in missing work.

Can I Have My Phone Out?

No.

Do I Need My Laptop Every Day?

Bring it just in case. Sometimes we’ll be doing tasks on our computers.

What Else Do I Need To Know?

I am very accommodating and want you to do well and ask for help. It’s better to ask questions than to go home lost and confused.

By the end of the year, if you can beat me at a 50 states map quiz, I’ll buy candy and prizes for the whole class!
